Kolkata, Apr 25 : West Bengal fire & emergency services department, in consultation with the government, is going to set up a fire cease academy in Kalyani. About 30 acres have been acquired from the civil defence authorities, said fire & emergency services' additional director general, Debapriya Biswas.
"We are in talks with Jadavpur and Kalyani universities for affiliation," he said. Fire engineers from Indian Institute of Fire Engineering (Nagpur) will constitute a part of the teaching faculty.
Higher secondary passouts are eligible to enroll for this bachelor of engineering (fire) degree course, he said in an interactive session on industrial, commercial & residential safety organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce on Friday.
At present the department has two (27 and 54 metres) ladders, which are not sufficient for rescuing people trapped in fire. So, for an efficient and quick service two more will be bought at a cost of Rs 9-10 crore each, said Biswas. "We are going to float a global tender for the ladders next month," he said.
But Finland's Bronto Skylift, specialist in fire applications, is the only company which supplies such ladders. So this tender is just an official formality, he said.
Present in the session, fire & emergency services minister-in-charge, Pratim Chatterjee, said: "In another 15 months we are going to have two more 70-metre ladders for rescuing people from fire." When asked about plans to set up more fire stations, he said: "Seven more brigades are coming up in next seven or eight months and another 12 to 13 are in the pipeline." Each station will be set up at a cost of Rs 2 crore.
