New Delhi, Feb 19: European defence manufacturer Eurocopter is currently bidding for an Indian Army contract for 197 light helicopters. The firm is offering its Fennec 550C3 model.

“We expect the selection (of Fennec 550C3) soon to replace the Cheetahs and Chetaks of the Indian army,” EADS president and CEO Lutz Bertling told FE.

He said, “We are 100% compliant to the specification given by the Indian Army. In fact, we have already started production in Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and we expect the first inspection of the same in the first quarter of 2007.”

“We are doing this, so that in case we get the order we will make the first delivery later this year itself,” Bertling added.

Fennec 550C3 has been successfully demonstrated that it can cope with the demanding high altitude and hot temperature operational requirements which make it the natural successor of Cheetah in full compliance to the needs of the Indian Army, he said.

However, we as a company tend to be conservative and expect to be invited for consultations. India is looking for the best product and we don’t really need lobbying,” the officials said.

Besides this, the company is waiting to receive tenders for 16 naval helicopters. The tenders will be re-issued as India’s requirements have changed, In fact, the Indian navy now wants higher range Eurocopter EC725. This helicopter is already in service in France, Bertling informed.

“We are in partnership with HAL and are also set to work on around 200 multi-role helicopters. We will reach a high degree of commonality with the Indian navy multi-role helicopters. It is an urgent requirement,” the officials said.

Eurocopter group showed a strong presence at the recently concluded Aero India 2007 in Bangalore, presenting its range of commercial helicopters and latest military technology.

Bertling said, “Eurocopter’s business focus in India for 2007 is to further...
