E&Y gives away entrepreneur of the year awards

Mumbai: Ernst & Young organised its tenth ‘Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of The Year Awards 2008’ on Wednesday, November 26, at the Taj Land’s End in Mumbai. As many as 400 of the country’s leading industrialists and corporate personalities gathered at the occasion.

The finalists were selected from over 291 nominations received this year, which is highest since the launch of the awards in 1999.

The award for ‘Entrepreneur of The Year 2008’ was conferred upon Anil Agarwal, executive chairman, Vedanta Resources, one of the leading metals and mining company.

Agarwal will be representing India at the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Monte Carlo, Monaco in May 2009.

Eight other entrepreneurs received these awards across various categories at the award ceremony.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to PRS Oberoi, chairman and CEO, The Oberoi group.

Jaiprakash Gaur, founder chairman, Jaypee Group, received the Entrepreneur of the Year Infrastructure & Construction.

In the manufacturing category, Gautam Thapar, chairman and CEO, Avantha Group, was announced as the winner.

The award for the Start-Up Entrepreneur Of The Year was given to Arvind Rao, CEO and co-founder, OnMobile Global.

The Services Category Award was received by Rohinton Screwvala, CEO, UTV Software Communications.

Sanjeev Bikhchandani, CEO and MD, and Hitesh Oberoi, director and COO, Info Edge (India) received the award for Entrepreneur Of The Year-Business Transformation.

The award for the Manager Entrepreneur Of The Year was given to A M Naik, chairman and MD, Larsen & Tourbo.

The Health Care & Life Sciences Award was presented to P Namperumalsamy, chairman, Aravind Eye Care Systems.

The six-member jury was chaired by KV Kamath, MD and CEO, ICICI Bank. Ravi Venkatesan, chairman, Microsoft India; Shobhana Bhartia, chairperson and editorial director, HT Media; Manish Kejriwal, senior managing director and country head, Temasek Holdings Advisors India; R Seshasayee, MD, Ashok Leyland and Tarun Das, chief mentor, CII, were the other members of the jury.
