New Delhi, April 25: Making a strong case for discouraging any confrontation or use of force against Iran, India on Tuesday said such a threat could only exacerbate tensions in a region which is of vital importance.
“We have heard reports that there may be use of force or sanctions against Iran. Confrontation or the threat or use of force can only exacerbate tensions in a region which is of vital importance to India, and must, therefore, be avoided at all costs,” an external affairs ministry spokesman said.
Elaborating India’s views on the issue ahead of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report to the UN Security Council on Iran nuclear issue, he said India values its civilisational ties and traditionally close and friendly relations with Iran and has repeatedly declared that issues relating to Iran’s nuclear programme should be resolved through dialogue.
The IAEA is slated to submit its report on Iran’s compliance with its non- proliferation commitments to the Security Council on April 28.
Iran has the right to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, but this must be consistent with its international commitments and obligations, he said
India, along with other friendly countries, has continued to make efforts to reach an amicable resolution of outstanding issues through a patient dialogue, the spokesman added.
