Hyderabad:: The US-based $34 billion hardware and IT services major Dell Computer Corporation has set a target to achieve an export revenue of Rs 220 crore in the first five years of operations out of Hyderabad.

Dell Computer, which has chosen Hyderabad as the next destination for its technical centre (call centre) operations after Bangalore, has geared up its operations in the city by acquiring close to 150,000 sq ft area at the Cyber Gateway, the second phase of L&T Infocity, recently, sources close to the development told eFE.

According to the sources, Dell Computer has also decided to spruce up its manpower from the initial level of 100 to 500 in a year and would eventually scale up to 1,000 the following year. The company is expected to start operations from March 2003, the sources added.

It is investing over Rs 25 crore initially in starting the operations and would pump in more money once the things settled down, the sources claimed. Dell has worldwide operations and huge customers to provide the customer support service and the company has obtained the necessary approval from STPH (Software Technology Parks of India Hyderabad) for exports.

As its worldwide business volume continues to grow, Dell may even ramp up its manpower by recruiting 100 professionals a month for the next few months, the sources said further.

Meanwhile, Dell Computer in a communique, has said that the company is establishing a 100-seat technical support centre (name it back office service centre or customer service centre) in Hyderabad to support customers around the world, who use the company’s desktop, workstation and notebook computers. The FE had earlier reported on the company’s proposed operations in Hyderabad.

The new facility is required to support Dell’s growing business and to assist with work formerly performed by outsourcers. Dell’s worldwide unit volumes grew by 24 per cent in Q4, the communique said further.
