Delhi Metro has 26% increase in ridership

Delhi Metro, which recently entered into United Nations' green list, witnessed a rise of above 26 per cent in ridership, carrying 20 crore commuters during 2007.

"The Delhi Metro network saw a rise in ridership of 26.04 per cent, from 16 crore in 2006 to 20 crore in 2007," DMRC Chief Public Relations Officer Anuj Dayal said.

He said Line-1 (ShahdaraRithala) saw a rise of 14.44 per cent from 5.7 crore to 6.5 crore and Line-2 (Central Secretariat-Vishwa Vidyalaya) saw a rise of 26.37 per cent from 4.7 crore to six crore.

"Metro's Line-3 has emerged as the most popular corridor of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, with the line's ridership increasing by over 37 per cent during last year," Dayal said.

According to the final ridership figures for 2007, Line-3 carried 7.8 crore commuters in 2007 as against 5.7 crore a year earlier, he said.

The traffic earning on this line rose by 39.76 per cent in 2007, reaching Rs 96 crore from Rs 69 crore in 2006.

Overall, the earning of the entire Metro network increased by 24.7 per cent from Rs 189 crore in 2006 to Rs 236 crore in 2007, Dayal said.

The Delhi Metro which carries 6,50,000 passengers per day has reduced 40,000 vehicles from city's roads and saved many lives due to reduced road accidents, he added.
