Kolkata, Dec 27 : Godrej HiCare Ltd, a pest management company of the Godrej group, would explore the opportunities in India before expanding operations into South Asia and the United Arab Emirates, putting on hold plans for an overseas expansion.
S Anand, executive vice-president, told FE that the company has stalled its initiative to float overseas subsidiaries but is currently expanding its services in Tier-2 Indian cities like Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Kochi, Surat and Lucknow. At present its services are available in Tier-1 cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Chennai.
He clarified that the overseas plan has not been shelved.
Godrej HiCare Ltd was spun off as a separate company in 2004 from Godrej Sara Lee. According to Anand, it was the first company to start domestic and commercial pest management services in India. It provides solutions to all kinds of pests including cockroaches, termites, rodents, black & red ants, spiders, flies, mosquitoes, bed bugs and wood borers.
Such services are highly unorganised in India and Godrej HiCare has given an industry approach to it. It provides the services on an annual maintenance contract basis, Anand said.
Pest Control India (PCI) is the only other company that provides pest management services.
Anand said the company is trying to step up the use of technology in pest management, launching its Therma-Cam thermal imaging camera that produces fully radiometric images and scans moving termites inside furniture.
Termites can not otherwise be detected without breaking the suspect furniture. The company is also trying to use more herbal solutions in place of chemicals for treating insects.
Although the market for such services is still nascent in India, the company's turnover was Rs 22 crore in 2005-06, Anand said.
"We have been doubling our turnover every year and hope to retain this trend in the coming years too," Anand said.
Godrej HiCare currently services clients such as hotels, clubs and high-worth buildings.
