: Workers at Tata Steel’s European arm Corus on Thursday said they are not ready to negotiate with the company on the payment of bonus at gun point and may resort to “industrial action” against the company.
“Tata Corus do not want to pay bonus until they have renegotiated the bonus agreements. This is attempting to force the unions to negotiate under duress. We have repeatedly stated that we will not negotiate with a gun to our heads,” a spokesperson of the community union, the biggest employees union at Corus mills said.
“Our members have begun to demand action. Hartlepool and Corby, both in the Tubes business have requested a ballot for industrial action. The Orb plant in South Wales (strip products) has also requested a ballot for industrial action,” he added.
However, it could not be confirmed whether the “industrial action” could be in the form of a strike. Workers at the Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus are demanding bonus for the first quarter of the current fiscal. Tata Steel paid Rs 81 crore as bonus to its about 16,500 employees at Jamshedpur plant for 2008-09.
