Bangalore, July 23: Technologies were merging and India should focus on converging sciences, said President APJ Abdul Kalam.
Interacting with students over a satellite distant education system at the launch of a conference on ‘Edusat’ here, Dr Kalam said, “biotechnology, nano technology and nano sciences, space technology, apart from material sciences are where we should focus. Then the 25th century will belong to India.”
“Many miracles will happen when technologies merge,” he said explaining, “biotechnology merged with information technology to give bioinformatics. This could merge with space sciences to give rise to newer areas. Convergence of sciences is the area of future,” he said.
He said that with a view to promoting pure sciences in education as against mere professional courses, the University Grants Commission was planning to take up four institutions in the country and run research-based courses for 100 students in each institution. The 400 students would then be absorbed in institutions such as ISRO.
Urging students to ‘excel’ in education and have an entrepreneurial spirit, he said that an ideal university would have teachers who are role models and students who, when graduated, generate employment rather than seek it.
Asked by a student whether cloning would lead to better human race, Dr Kalam said he was against human cloning and would not encourage it to be done in India.
“The human system is a result of million and millions of years of genetic engineering by God. No body should interfere in that,” he said adding that cloning however could be used for various human body parts to meet medical requirements.
