The Congress high command on Wednesday intervened to pacify the agitated Maharashtra revenue minister Narayan Rane who strongly opposed the state cabinet’s decision to allot 100 hectares of land to Videocon Industries for its Rs 8,000 crore fab unit in Navi Mumbai. FE had broken story about Rane opposing the land allotment to Videocon Industries, on Wednesday. All India Congress Committee general secretary in charge of Maharashtra, Margaret Alva spoke to the acting state unit chief Patangrao Kadam and asked the latter to talk to the chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and Rane to know their respective views. The Congress high command’s intervention indicates that the party does not want the fued between Deshmukh and Rane to cross limits and thereby adversely impact the functioning of the Congress-led government and the party organisation in particular.

Meanwhile, Rane has clarified that he has not yet submitted his resignation to the party high command. Rane on Tuesday had threatened to step down from the council of ministers to protest against the government’s decision to allot land to Videocon at a paltry sum. Rane dubbed news of his resignation shown by various news channels as “rumours”.

While Deshmukh was all in favour of the Videocon project, Rane took strong objection to clearing the same without following the tender route. Deshmukh was quite keen that the project should not go to any other states, which had already made attempts to lure Videocon. The chief minister was quite clear that the government has not given land at a throw away price but as per the prevailing rates in the Navi Mumbai region.

However, Rane was of the view that had the land allotment taken place by adhereing to tender/auction, the state-run CIDC could have fetched at least Rs 3,000 crore.
