New Delhi, Aug 29 : Setting the ball rolling for forthcoming Assembly elections in several states as well as general elections next year, the Congress leadership has convened a meeting of the apex decision making body, the Congress Working Committee on September 13.
Party leaders on Friday asserted that the extended meeting of the CWC would provide the first opportunity in weeks to the party to take a collective call on the approach in coming Assembly polls. Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh as well as Jammu and Kashmir would be going to polls by November, for which the party has to get everything including the list of candidates in place before Parliament session begins on October 17.
The meeting is also expected to take a view on overall approach to general elections, which is likely to be held in April next year. The party has already got down to the exercise of cementing alliances, beginning with the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh. Alliance talks with SP are expected to be held here this weekend with Rahul Gandhi heading the Congress team.
Party general secretary Digvijay Singh and Uttar Pradesh state unit president Rita Bahuguna Joshi will be the other members of the team which will have talks with SP leaders Amar Singh and Ram Gopal Yadav.
