Mumbai, September 27:: Tata Motors said coming out with the Rs 1 lakh car is both a social and business responsibility.

"The Rs 1 lakh small car would bring down the carbon dioxide emission," Tata Motors MD Ravi Kanth said.

Kanth said that the launch of the car cannot be deferred or stopped due to lack of infrastructure.

"Infrastructure woes are being taken care of by the government. Both infrastructure development and launch of the small car have to be done in a parallel way," he said.

On why the company wanted to launch the small car, he said, "because people want to have a small car".

Tata Motors, which is bidding for Land Rover and Jaguar, is bullish about the UK auto market. The capability of auto brands in UK are high, Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata said at the conference.

The Indian auto industry is plagued with high interest rates and invariably high input cost, with an appreciating rupee adding to the woes.

"Higher interest rates are affecting the consumption. Strengthening of the rupee is affecting the exports. We cannot withdraw our capital expenditure because they are committed. The industry is affected because of the huge input costs in the last few years," Ravi Kanth said.

Apart from these drawbacks, rise in metal prices have had a debilitating effect on the sector.

"So, it is an extremely challenging situation for the auto industry," he said.

The industry can tackle these problems internally by launching new products and marketing aggressively, he said.

To a query on price cuts or discounts for the festival season, Ravi Kanth declined to comment.

Mr Kanth says bringing small car would reduce carbon di oxide emission which amazes me. unless it is a electric car there is only upward spirall in co2 emission. also where is the infrastructure in terms of roads, parking space in metros. the roll out should be in phased manner rather than flooding the market with small car which would mean a traffic disaster for almost everycity in the country. I would suggest indian auto makers to think of investment in alternate fuel (ethanol based hydrogen based) or electric cars which would be the real social responsibility.

If the Tata small car project had been sited in Karnataka or Tamil Nadu's Hosur area(near Bangalore), the project would have had very smooth sailing.Yes it is a social responsibility also. Landowners also need to be suitably compensated and given preference in jobs in the plant. The small car is a reasonable necessity for middle class. The Indian middle class is also clearly categorised as HIG, MIG, LIG etc. just as vested interests have deliberately and mischievously divided our society into SC, ST, OBC ,BC etc. These lists are increasing and increasing only; at least twentyfive percent need to be deleted from these lists; even the Supreme Court was also constrained to ask very recently - and very rightly and pertinently so - asto why these categories lists are going on increasing only and why no reasonable eliminations have meanwhile been done. The concerned castes National Commission says that no complaints have been received in this regard. Who will make a self-destructive application in this regard to the said National Commission?!
