Coir Board plans training programmes to push exports

Kochi, Aug 4 : The Coir Board has decided to conduct short-term training programmes in production techniques to increase the export-share of value-added products. “Taking into consideration the emerging global market for coir and allied products, the work force has to be trained in various value-addition processes. Accordingly it has been decided to organise training programmes all over India during the Eleventh Plan period," board chairman AC Jose said.

The board has also decided to revise the courses and syllabii at its training institute, the National Coir Training and Design Center (NCT & DC) at Kalavoor. Currently, the board conducts two regular training programmes, one in advance coir technology and a six months’ artisan's training course. In addition to these programmes, the board has chalked out training programmes in 25 different areas of the coir sector.

The training programmes include a short-term course in manufacture of coir carpets, loom mats, coir composites and rubberised coir products. The new courses will also cover knowledge up gradation of entrepreneurs by providing exposure in export procedures, testing of products and effluent treatment in coir processing, a board source said.
