Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 30 : Coca-Cola, backed by Indian Red Cross Society, has handed over 41 houses constructed in Colachel in South Tamil Nadu to the families hit by tsunami in 2004. After Cuddalore Dockyard Project and Velankanni ‘Vidiaylai Noki’ livelihood initiative, Colachel housing project is the third major disaster relief project of Coca-Cola in Tamil Nadu.

The company had pumped in Rs 1 crore with Kanyakumari district administration pitching about Rs 10 lakh towards this project, according to Deepak Jolly, vice-president (communication), Coca Cola India. It was PPP (Public -Private - People partnership) involving Coca-Cola, Red Cross Society, Gram Panchayat, District Administration and the local community that made the housing project possible, he said, at a function in Colachel.

Tamil Nadu Tourism Minister N Suresh Rajan handed over the houses to the 41 beneficiary families at Colachel.

Vimala Ramalingam, President, Redcross Society (Tamil Nadu Chapter) described the initiative as “a true partnership between corporate sector and a non-governmental organization for implementing community projects for the needy”.

Coca-Cola India and Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages had undertaken a livelihood project for 85 families in Velankanni in Nagapattinam district, which was commissioned on June 5, 2008 as part of World Environment Day celebrations. Another livelihood project is expected to be commissioned for 40 families in Mahabalipuram near Chennai in July ‘08. In-addition, about 200 fishermen families have also benefited from the livelihood project in Cuddalore. The project included providing fishing boats and construction of a dockyard in 2006.

“Coca Cola has initiated a series of activities across the country through PPPs on water sustainability, environment protection and community development. Our focus will continue to be on projects which improve the overall standard of living among communities where we operate,” Jolly said.
