New Delhi, Feb 4: As part of a talent development strategy for India in the information technology sector, Cisco is aiming to expand the country’s networking workforce capacity to 3.6 lakh engineers in the next five years, a six-fold increase over present employment levels.

Cisco has partnered with technologies training organisations IIHT and NIIT for providing authorised Cisco training materials and certifications to students and professionals at more than 200 locations throughout the country, Cisco said in a statement on Monday.

“Furthering its goals to enhance the development of IT talent in India, Cisco announced a series of country-specific initiatives aimed at expanding India's capacity to train, employ and retain highly qualified networking and systems engineers,” the company said. According to IT research firm IDC, India’s surging economic development will create a demand for 1.3 lakh more networking professionals by 2009.

“Globalisation will continue to transform India's economy and will require its young workforce to develop skills that are market-driven,” said Leo Scrivner, vice president of human resources for Cisco Services & Globalisation Centre East. In concert with these new partnerships, Cisco is also announcing a push towards increasing access to its examination facilities through its primary test-delivery partner, Pearson VUE.

Seeing the potential of a skilled workforce in India, the US-based networking equipment giant is planning to double its headcount in the country in the next three years. Cisco's chairman and CEO John Chambers on his visit to India in October had said that the company would increase headcount in India from 3,200 employees at present to 10,000 by 2010. Also, it will move 20% of its top talent in every function to India by 2012.

In October 2005, Cisco had announced an investment of $1.1 billion in India for the next two to three years. Of this, $750 million is targeted at research and development, $150 million towards Cisco Capital, $100 million each for venture capital and customer support. About $50 million of this investment was committed for setting up Globalisation Center East campus with a capacity of about 3,000 peoplein Bangalore.
