New Delhi, January 2:: Delhiites pulled out more woolens from their winter wardrobe on Wednesday as mercury plummeted to the season's lowest of 1.9 degree Celsius.

Last year the same day, the minimum temperature was recorded at nine degree Celsius.

The year began on a shivering note as temperature dipped to 2.6 degree Celsius on Tuesday, the coldest start for a New Year in the past five years.

Tuesday’s maximum was recorded at 21 degree Celsius.

"It is chillier than last year. Model projections suggest that the prevailing cold wave conditions are likely to continue for a couple of days," a MeT official said.

Wednesday’s minimum is five notches below normal at this period of time, the official said adding Thursday might be more chillier with the likelihood of the minimum dropping to near one degree Celsius mark.

The official attributed the fall in the temperature to cold wave conditions, currently prevailing over Haryana, north Rajasthan and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh.

"It is really cold and even three layers of woollens did not help me fight the cold in the morning. It was horrible driving a motorcycle to my college from my south Delhi residence," Sumit Ranjan, a college student, said.
