Kolkata, Nov 20: Chettinad Health City, a super-speciality hospital in Chennai and the only centre in Asia where robots perform heart valve-replacement surgery, is going to set up two super-speciality consultative clinics in Kolkata in the next two months. Each clinic will have an online telemedicine facility.
"We have chosen Kolkata as our first destination outside Tamil Nadu as almost every fourth patient coming to us or going to other Chennai hospitals for treatment of cardiovascular diseases, liver and kidney transplantation, joint replacement, ophthalmology and nephrology is a Kolkatan. We thought of opening up the consultative clinics here so that patients do not have to go all the way to Chennai for check- ups," said R Ravi Kumar, director, Institute of Cardiovascular Disease & Robotic Surgery Centre, Chettinad Health City.
The group is also keen on opening up consultative clinics in West Asia and Africa in six months. Negotiations are on, but the director did not divulge many details.
Forty robotic surgeries have been performed at the 1,000-bed health city over a span of 10 months. It aims to see 100 more over the next 12, said Kumar.
He said such surgery comes for around Rs 1.65 lakh, which is a little higher than the cost of traditional heart surgery at around Rs 1.25-1.50 lakh.
