Chandigarh, Aug 3: Chandigarh administration is awaiting approval from the centre to make it to the final list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. Having become the first city in India, to be placed on the tentative list of the World Heritage Sites, Chandigarh is now waiting to join the league of six other countries which submitted their entries to UNESCO on January 31.
Once placed on UNESCO's permanent list, Chandigarh will not only join the league, which includes, Tel Aviv, Brasilia and Le Havre(France), but also get a big fillip to tourism.
Talking to FE, a senior official of the UT administration said, “Since the last date of submission of the dossier was January 31, six countries including Japan, France, Italy etc submitted their entries about monuments made by Le Corbusier on time. But we missed the deadline due to delay in approval from the Centre. But we still stand a chance to make it to the list for this year, once the approval is given which is expected in another month or so.”
“After the Centre gives its consent to the proposal, ASI will further send it to UNESCO and if all parties agree, the UT will be considered for World Heritage Sites this year only,” said the official.
It is pertinent to mention that urban and architectural works of Corbusier are spread out across the world including France, Switzerland, Belgium, Argentina, Germany, Japan, Tokyo, USA and Algeria. In the case of Chandigarh it becomes important because it's the only work of Le Corbusier, where a complete plan of urban settlement was implemented as envisioned by him.
