Kolkata, January 11:: The Centre has accepted a new policy under which entrepreneurs could acquire 70 per cent of land directly from the farmers with their consent, Union Agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said.
"Seventy per cent land has to be acquired by the entrepreneur and, if required, it can seek help of the Government for acquisition of the remaining 30 per cent," Pawar said after a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
Land should be acquired at the market price and farmers properly rehabilitated, he said.
Citing an example of development of the New Mumbai city, Pawar said 36,000 acre was acquired, while 12.5 per cent of it was later returned to farmers after developing it for their rehabilitation.
"Not a single complaint was received from any farmer," he said.
"I placed this example before the Cabinet urging it to make it a model for development in all states," Pawar said.
Describing the acquisition of land for industrialization as a common problem for all state governments, Pawar said there were small land holding in all states including West Bengal. Even in Maharashtra most land holdings were within two acre.
Any state government required land for setting up industry, development of townships, expansion of highways and roads and irrigation projects, but this should be done protecting the interest of farmers, he said.
