: • While the overall sales rankings have been made on the basis of the available universe of private and public sector quoted companies, the other rankings (assets, net worth, gross profit, market capitalisation, composite) are restricted to the FE 500.

• Every attempt has been made to make all figures comparable and compatible with our definitions. All the related data are taken from the respective balance sheets only.

• Twelve companies changed their accounting period during 2005-06. They are ACC, Areva T&D (I), Ashima, Balrampur Chini, Blue Dart Express, Escorts, Gujarat NRE, Gammon (I), GTL, Hindustan Motors, PCS Technology and Steelco Gujarat.

• Wherever accounting periods have been less or more than 12 months, sales, operating profit, gross profits, PBT, PAT, and retained profit figures have been annualised. Since they are balance sheet components in nature, net worth and assets have not been annualised.

• Some large sized companies could not be included in the study because balance sheets and profit and loss accounts were not available. These companies are: Videocon Industries, SPIC, Sandesh, Recron Synthetics, J K Synthetics, Hindustan National Glass, LML, Nova Petrochemicals, Sterling Biotec, Central India Polyester, FCI Techno & Products, Indian Charge Chrome, Indo Gulf Fertilisers, Indo National, Jai Balaji Sponge, Jai Corporation, NEPC, South Asian Petro Chemical, and Vimal Oil & Food.
