Kolkata, Jan 28 : West Bengal labour minister Anadi Sahu on Monaday said the cable TV trade should get the status of an industry as it plays a big role in communicating news and programmes on current affairs to a large section of the society.
Sahu inaugurated the 11th edition of Cable TV Show at the Netaji Indoor Stadium here.
Al Jazeera, an Arab-based English news channel, is sponsoring the three-day event. The channel, which could be seen in India from March this year, is paying Rs 5 lakh. "We can not take more than that as it would be a violation of rules," said Suresh Sethia, executive committee member of the Cable TV Equipment Traders & Manufactures Association.
According to Pawan Jajodia, chairman of the exhibition committee, over 10,000 cable operators, traders, manufacturers, channel partners, distributors, broadcasters, multi system operators from India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal are taking part.
