New Delhi, March16: In the wake of sharp rise in wheat prices in the southern states, the Cabinet Committee on Pricing on Thursday approved the import of 5 lakh tonne of wheat.
In another major decision, the Cabinet approved issuing of special securities to the tune of Rs 16,000 crore to Food Corporation of India (FCI) in lieu of the grains supplied by it to the rural development ministry for food-for-work programme. Finance minister P Chidambaram, however, told reporters that the matter would go to the parliament for approval. Regarding rising prices of sugar, he said the prices will become ’moderate’ soon, as sugar production is likely to be very high this year.
The Cabinet on Thursday approved setting up of six new medical research institutions on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) by 2009. These institutes will be based in the states of Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, Rajasthan, Bihar and Uttaranchal.
Announcing the decision, Mr Chidambaram said: “Each of these 850-bedded institution will provide treatment in 39 super speciality/speciality disciplines. These would also provide undergraduate medical education with 100 intake capacity per year. The state governments will provide at least 100 acres of land along with water and power supply and road connectivity for the same.”
