Taking a cue from West Bengal chief minister Buddhdeb Bhattacharya’s statement that the “UPA government has failed to perform,” the CPI on Sunday said that there are many in the Left who are unsatisfied with their support to the Centre. The party also said that the next meeting of the Left parties, scheduled on May 23, will take “a serious stand” against the UPA government.
The renewed “warning” from the second largest Left party is in the wake of the Centres’s alleged “failure” to curb the price rise. A two-day meeting of the national executive of the CPI, which ended here on Sunday, also protested against the Centre’s “enthusiasm” to go ahead with the Indo-US nuclear deal and the decision to divest 24 PSUs in the country.
“Left parties are meeting on May 23. We will take into account the government’s failure in controlling the price rise and its stand on the nuclear deal. We will take some stand which is serious,” CPI general secretary AB Bardhan told reporters here at a press conference. Adding that there is “a growing pressure” for the Left to take stand against the Centre, Bardhan said, “Several sections of the people and the Left followers have started raising questions whether it is worthwhile to support a government which opposes the views of its supporters. Therefore we are thinking very seriously on those lines. This sentiment will be brought to the notice of other Left parties on May 23.”
However, another Left parties are not giving such an importance for the May 23 meeting. A senior Left leader said the May 23 meeting is “just to discuss” the nuclear deal. “We are expecting the government’s reply to our queries regarding the safeguards agreement. We might take some more time to discuss it. That is the reason to hold the Left meeting five days ahead of the Left-UPA meeting,” he said.
