Feeling let down by the “big brotherly attitude” of the CPI(M), the CPI is all set to ask one Rajya Sabha seat from the CPI(M)’s kitty in the coming Rajya Sabha elections in the West Bengal. Complaining that the CPI had been denied a Rajya Sabha seat from the state since 2002, the party will soon approach the Left Front asking for “at least one seat” out of the five, which has to be filled in an election in April next.
Of the five, three seats will go to CPI(M) and one each to the Forward Bloc and to the principal Opposition party in the state, the Trinamool Congress. The CPI, sources said, will demand the CPI(M) to give one seat from its share for the party. “We need proper representation in the Rajya Sabha from the state. We were denied a Rajya Sabha MP since 2002. This has to be rectified,” a senior central leader of the CPI told FE.
The CPI(M), however, is not that receptive to this idea of its partner. “Seats are distributed according to the representation in state Assembly. The Left Front will decide this,” a CPI(M) leader said. At present, the CPI has eight members in the West Bengal Assembly.
