New Delhi, Jan 23: Distancing itself from the CPI(M) agenda favouring a third alternative, the CPI—the second largest party in the Left Front—on Wednesday contended that such a formation cannot be a spontaneous affair.
In its assessment of the current political situation which can be positive for the Congress in the near future, the CPI said that its decision on prospective alliances, that would be tuned primarily to keep the BJP out of power, would be based on the ‘‘prevailing situation.’’
‘‘The CPI and other Left wings will have to pursuade and associate the regional parties on economic issues. The party must also fight for the genuine regional aspirations,’’ the draft political resolution of the party released here by general secretary AB Bardhan said. However, the document added that such an alternative will not come spontaneously but only through joint struggles. ‘‘It is possible that there will be transitional secular democratic phase arising from defeat of the rightist communal BJP’s bid for power. What attitude the party will take in such transitional phase will depend on the prevailing situation,’’ the draft resolution added.
Bardhan told the newsmen his party understood the motive behind forming the UNPA by some regional parties. He reiterated that there will be state-spacific seat adjustments with the secular parties in the coming elections.
‘‘In the coming elections, we will ensure BJP’s defeat,’’ he said. When asked about Congress, he said that his party considers Congress as a ‘secular’ party. ‘‘Congress is a secular party, but it sometimes compromises with communal forces,’’ he added.
The document is highly critical of the CPI(M)'s for its mishandling of the Nandigram issue. "The Left Front government has to function as a government of the Front and not as a one-party government. There has to be transparency, mutual consultation on all major issues, including on the development of West Bengal," Bardhan said. He added that the differences are being solved through "frank" discussions.
The draft has also reiterated its stand on nuclear deal. "It is not the nuclear deal alone which is taking the situation almost to a breaking point. In equal measure, and perhaps more, it is the galloping price rise, the anti-people economic policies, the cynical unconcern about agrarian crisis and the grim spate of farmers' suicides which is resulting in growing disenchantment and conflicts," it said.
