Kochi, Dec 20: Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) has decided to set up a dedicated economy terminal for low-budget airlines, CIAL sources said. This is part of the ambitious development plan that hopes to keep the nation's first private airport ahead of others.

The proposed no-frills terminal will facilitate quicker turnaround time and lower charges for landing, parking, and ground handling.

The passenger operations will be done from a single floor building and will have no travellators, escalators, and aerobridges. Cutting down the expenses, the terminal will be a boon to the growing low-cost carriers, sources said.

CIAL plans to spare 300-acres for the terminal and will take up the construction in the near future.

Like all its counterparts in the developed world, CIAL is also trying to develop its non-flight revenue stream. Major international airports of the world have 50-80 % of their revenue coming in from other sources like hospitality, amusement, and maintenance. CIAL has currently a rapidly growing revenue stream from its passenger and freight operations, but could come under pressure with the expansion of the Kozhikode airport and the construction of the Kannur airport.
