Chennai, Feb 23: The P&O Ports-managed Chennai Container Terminal Ltd (CCTL) has engaged crane operators from outside to expedite cargo handling since its workers are still on a go-slow strike. Cargo handling has picked up momentum since Tuesday to 1,200 moves of cargo loading and despatch from 890 on Monday. The operations were in good pace on Wednesday also.
CCTL sources said the workers in the terminal were continuing the slow pace of work in spite of a High Court injunction restraining them from go-slow.
They said now 21 crane operators who arrived from other terminals operated by P&O in Mumbai and Mundra, Gujarat, are assisting operations at the terminal in Chennai. CCTL is also training contract labourers in both yard and crane operations. It is planning to recruit more local labour and bring operations to normalcy at the earliest, officials said.
