New Delhi, July 4:: With the Samajwadi Party sending positive signals on the Indo-US nuclear deal after the UNPA meeting, a buoyant Congress on Thursday stepped up its attack on the Left questioning its 'blackmailing' tactics and accusing it of helping communal forces.

The ruling party at the Centre also termed the nuclear deal as “national pride” adding that the Congress would protect it “at any cost”. “I do not think any patriotic party will destabilise the Government on the issue of nuclear deal,” AICC media cell chairperson Veerappa Moily told reporters in New Delhi.

Wondering about the Left’s “agenda”, he said, “Sum total of the Left’s statements is we (Left) will not allow the operationalisation of the deal. The Prime Minister has also been saying he will take a sense of Parliament before operationalising it. Do they (Left) gain anything by blackmailing the Government? Would the Communists, with the kind of ideology they have, help communal forces?” said Moily.

The Congress leader also expressed satisfaction about the deliberations at the UNPA meeting. “We do not expect the UNPA to give a decision so early. But they are not negative. After all, the UNPA is a responsible outfit. The BJP will realise that its vote bank has slipped away because they opposed the nuclear deal,” he said. Moily said he was confident “for the last couple of days” that there was no threat to the stability of the Government.
