: Harshal Chavan has one bad habit: he can be very finicky over details. He is a second generation entrepreneur, now managing Harshal Equipment Private Ltd, which is an OEM for material handling equipment and systems as well as manufacturing of assorted custom made fabrication items. The product range varies from simple trolleys to complex systems like cranes, conveyors, hydraulic lifting platforms, complex conveying systems and assembly lines.

His company designs, manufactures and commissions the systems, thus providing a one-stop solutions to all material handling problems. The foundation stone of HEPL group was laid by his father ND Chavan in early 1970s. Within two years of Harshal's joining, HEPL group expanded its capacity by setting up HNC Engineering Equipment Private Limited. The group has expertise in the field for over 40 years. His clients are in all major cities: Mumbai, Pune, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Kolkata, Delhi, Bangalore, Kandla, Daman, Vapi, etc.

To cut a long story short, his father having graduated with an engineering degree began his career with a German multinational company, but with a ''clear aim of setting up his own industry''. That attitude runs in the family. He set up his first unit with the name of Carrier Cooling Industries in Mumbai in mid 70s and then shifted to Navi Mumbai in 1970.

Chavan Senior is an affable, approachable and down-to-earth man which obviously made him the right candidate for the presidentship of the Small Scale Entrepreneurs Association for 18 years. He witnessed the rise and rise of one of the longest industrial belts in Asia from the beginning, and he was the founder member of a number of organizations -- those dealing with social, environmental and industrial issues.

In 1980, HEPL was established as an expansion to augment the existing capacities of Carrier Cooling Industries. Due to Chavan's enormous experience in pneumatics, hydraulics and material handling equipment, today HEPL is amongst the best in the field of material handling.

But the son believes that application of new technology will play the lead role in the company's future. At HEPL customer service is the centre of all activities. ''Continuous improvement of our systems and working practices enables us to foster closer relationships with suppliers, and innovative customer relationship management strategies are helping us to create a true customer centric ethos''.
