New Delhi, Apr 4 : Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (Bhel) and Nuclear Power Corporation of India limited (NPCIL) on Friday executed an memorandum of understanding (MoU) for setting up nuclear power plants in India and abroad.

Under the MoU the two companies have agreed to form a Joint Venture Company (JVC), which will carry out engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) activities for Nuclear Power Plants (Conventional island).

“Through this JVC, the two companies will work jointly to complement their respective core strengths in the areas of nuclear power generation at a crucial juncture when the nation is looking at adding huge power generating capacities from nuclear energy to meet the growing energy needs of the country,” chairmman and managing director, Bhel K Ravi Kumar said after signing an MoU with NPCIL CMD, SK Jain in the presence of the minister of heavy industries, Santosh Mohan Dev. Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary, DAE and S Dash were also present at the signing ceremony. Ravi Kumar said the JVC will explore and evaluate the various technology options available for Steam Turbine Generator (STG) sets of 700 mw and above and also help in the development of Bhel as an indigenous source capable of designing and manufacturing STG sets of these ratings to meet the needs of various nuclear projects proposed to be set up in the country in future.

Bhel designed, manufactured and commissioned equipment accounts for around 80% of NPCIL’s installed capacity of 4,120 mw. The company has so far supplied power generating equipment of various ratings corresponding to nearly 3,280 mw for various nuclear power plants. Bhel has also been a major partner in NPCIL’s vision to achieve self-reliance in nuclear energy and its association with NPCIL began in 1970 with the development of technology and manufacture of prototype channel covers and heavy water headers.

NPCIL, as a utility, and Bhel, as an EPC contractor, have worked together on several NPCIL projects.
