Aditya Sapru, Group President - Strategy, Hinduja Group India Limited
There are two advices that stand out in my mind, perhaps by their relevance to the times we live in. A lunch with my grandfather was the setting for my first nugget. “Make sure you always enjoy the hakh butta (collard greens in a watery soup and rice, a staple Kashmiri dish), the nicer dishes will come and go but this is constant”. Never again in my life has a matter of such fortitude been conveyed in such a sublime manner. Years later at an offsite, my visible annoyance at a particularly persistent pesky business issue was calmed by a mere “It is just a job” by my then Chairman.
On multiple occasions I have reflected on the deep impact of these two advices. Appreciation of and building on the seemingly mundane and constant (read your core competence) and the talent to disengage, step back and separate data from noise (read segregating the ‘job’ from the ‘profession or ability’) are in my mind two fundamental enablers of
success.
