Thursday , March 20, 2008 at 0024 hrs Noted German football club FC Bayern Munich will be seen in action at the Yuba Bharati Krirangan, Salt Lake, on May 27. Bayern will take on Mohun Bagan, the national club of India.
Intitially, there was uncertainty over the match as Alberrto Colaso, the paid secretary of the All India Football Federation, tried to create some problems as he perhaps could not digest the fact the Bayern will be playing in Kolkata, and not in his native place, Goa.
However, an agreement between the host, Bengal Peerless, and Bayern ensures that the match will be played in Kolkata.
According to Kumar Shankar Bagchi, managing director of Bengal Peerless, the German team will reach the city on May 25. The tie against Mohun Bagan will be the last official appearance of Oliver Kahn, the famous goalkeeper, for Bayern. The team will also visit the Peerless Hospital and the house of Swami Vivekananda during its stay here.
"Organising the match is part of our corporate social responsibility. Moreover, we committed to Union financial minister P Chidambaram to contribute to the exchange of sports and cultural activities between the two countries", Bagchi said. He, however, denied that bringing Bayern to Kolkata is part of Bengal Peerless' aggressive marketing.
Besides India, the German club will also visit China and Indonesia.
