Mumbai: The All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC) have jointly given a call for nationwide bank strike on December 16 to protest the move for consolidation in the state-owned banking industry.
The protest is also for the ongoing move to merge State Bank of Indore with its parent organisation, State Bank of India.
Vishwas Utagi, secretary, AIBEA, told FE, “We are against any kind of consolidation in the banking industry and I term the move as closure of public sector banks and hence we are opposing it.”
Earlier reviving its consolidation move finance minister Pranab Mukherjee had met five leading state-run banks on Wednesday to discuss consolidation in the banking sector.
Canara Bank CMD AC Mahajan said, “We were asked to give our views. It’s an evolving process.” Commenting on the bank’s expansion plans, the chairman said, Canara Bank sees growth in Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra.
“We have a deficient presence in Maharashtra, Haryana and Gujarat. We are looking at inorganic growth in these states,” Mahajan said.
“We have an internal team which will start due diligence of some potential targets, and later we will appoint consultants from outside to take the process forward,” he said.
The other banks which joined the discussion with the finance minister were Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and Union Bank of India.
