Chennai: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), (Chennai Circle) better known as Chennai Telephones, has entered into an agreement with the UK-based International Seafarers’ Assistance Network (ISAN) for providing infrastructure services.
ISAN provides a free telephone service which is available to any seafarer from any country in the world. Under the agreement, the public telecom service provider would be providing the infrastructure required for ISAN to provide the free telephone service from India.
Speaking to eFE KB Brahmadathan, chief general manager of Chennai Telephones said the public telecom service provider had signed an agreement with ISAN a few days back. In fact, BSNL has already started providing its services to ISAN. He said, “ISAN provides a free telephone service for sailors throughout the world from London (United Kingdom). BSNL, Chennai circle, will essentially be providing bandwidth facility to ISAN for providing their service from India.”
Mr Brahmadathan said BSNL would get a fee from ISAN for providing the bandwidth. ISAN is a non-profit organisation which mainly provides a link between the seafarer and the existing help and information services throughout the world. It is a 24-hour call centre with the technology to log phone calls from seafarers, and pass them to the most relevant source of help.
