New Delhi, Dec 23: Taking lessons from the gang rape and murder of a BPO employee in Bangalore last week by a cab driver, call centres are taking all steps to ensure safety of employees. From pepper sprays and self defence CDs to teaching martial arts and monitoring cab movement with GPS systems, they are coming out with hi-tech solutions for the purpose. According to chief information officer of BPO India Sonam Saxena, “This year end we plan to give every employee a can of pepper spray with a self-defence and self-protection awareness CD.”
Companies making vehicle tracking systems have started offering solutions for employee security. KK Kutty of Siepmanns Card systems says, “Each vehicle will be equipped with a smart card reader. An employee’s smart card will be read by the card reader as she exits the cab. The data will be recorded in the BPO’s server.”
Countering police claim that security is employer’s responsibility, Ms Saxena of BPO India says, “I can cover every inch of my installation with CCTV, but how do I ensure that each and every employee reaches home safely?” President of Nasscom’s BPO committee and CEO of Genpact Pramod Bhasin said: “The measures should be preventive, rather than defensive. We verify drivers and provide security guards in cabs.”
