Bangalore, Jan 29: The Indian business process outsourcing (BPO) industry could potentially grow five-fold by 2012 to become $50 billion player and employ 20 lakh people in the country by then, according to the new Nasscom- Everest India BPO study.

The study said while the sector had an inherent momentum to become $30 billion player in the next four years, it required proactive support from stakeholders such as government, industry and educational sector, to achieve the $50 billion target.

The BPO industry in India is currently $11 billion in size, constituting 40% of world's business process offshore market. It employs seven lakh people across 25 countries. Within India, there are 1,200 companies, spread across 30 locations, including metros and second and third tier cities.

Nasscom president Som Mittal said that the industry would contribute 2.5% of India’s GDP by 2012, if the desirable growth was achieved. “India is not just offshore anymore, we have become part of the global delivery chain for clients. We need to build more employable manpower and better infrastructure to reach the size of $50 billion,” he said.

He said Nasscom was in talks with the government to promote integrated townships to promote ‘BPO hubs’ within the country.

Founder of Quattro BPO Raman Roy called for revamping of Indian educational system and better infrastructure in small towns to beat emerging business competition for the sector from the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Country head of strategy consulting company Everest Gaurav Gupta said that as the sector grows, companies would either become specialists or concentrate on building scale. Among others, the study recommended the promotion of the domestic BPO sector as a measure to improve competitiveness of the industry.
