



Kolkata, April 23 : Car major BMW India opened its dealership facility, OSL Prestige, on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass in Kolkata on Wednesday. The 4,300 square foot showroom, which is the company's first in the eastern region, has the capacity to display five cars.
"Our target is to sell 50 cars this year from the showroom," said Charchit Mishra, managing director of OSL Prestige. He said the showroom would serve the entire eastern region.
Peter Kronschnabl, president of BMW India, said: "Last year, we sold 1,387 BMW cars in India. This year, our target is 2000 units." Up to the end of March, 862 were sold in India. The largest BMW market in the country is Delhi.
At present, the three and five series varieties of BMW are produced in India at the Chennai plant, which commenced production in June 2007. The varieties available in India are three, five, six and seven series, X3 and X5, and sports cars M3, M5 and M6. "
He said seat covers and door panels are obtained locally, while the rest of the parts are imported from Germany.
"At present, the luxury car market in India has sold about 4,400 units. We want to be the largest in this segment by 2010," he said.
"In India, our closest competitors are Audi, Mercedes, Volvo and Porsche," Kronschnabl said. "Globally, "1.5 million cars were sold last year."
He said BMWs range in price from Rs 27 lakh to over Rs 1 crore.
