Stepping up its attack against the Congress by holding it responsible for the prevailing agrarian distress in the country, the BJP on Wednesday launched a nationwide ‘Kisan-Adalat’ (farmers court) campaign and accused the Centre for obstructing economic growth of rural India.
Conducting the first of the series of nationwide ‘Adalats’ here at the party headquarters, BJP president Rajnath Singh said, from an average contribution of 26% of GDP, the contribution of the agriculture sector had come down to only 18% in the last four years.
Addressing the gathering of about hundred-odd farmers, mostly drawn from the adjoining areas of the national Capital, Singh demanded that the government should spell out from where the money would come to meet Rs 60,000 crore well-trumpeted farm loan waiver plan.
Demanding a comprehensive policy to deal with the ‘alarming situation’ Singh promised that if BJP-led NDA formed the government at the Centre, it had a slew of measures up its sleeve, which would give required impetus to the sector.
Outlining the promises he said, the NDA would implement a pension scheme for old farmers, bring the rate of interest on farm credits to 4% and introduce farm income insurance scheme.
Meanwhile, in bid to woo formidable Jat community in Western UP the party also came out openly in support of farmers' leader Mahendra Singh Tikait. Criticising UP chief minister Mayawati, Singh demanded that cases against him be withdrawn.
