New Delhi, September 30:: State-owned engineering firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd today said it will raise its headcount by a massive 20,000 in the next five years as part of its expansion programme to increase manufacturing capacity.
"We shall be inducting 18,000-20,000 people in the next five years in almost all product lines at our various plants, BHEL Chairman and Managing Director Ashok K Puri said.
BHEL's recruitment drive comes after the the company shed over 15,000 employees through various rounds of Voluntary Retirement Schemes (VRS) till 2003. Currently, the company has over 42,600 employees on its rolls.
The decision to recruit 20k people in almost all categories -- engineering (mechanical or electrical) and other technical jobs -- is also in line with the government's agenda of more creating employment opportunities. BHEL is the country's biggest maker of power equipment and has 14 manufacturing divisions, with units at Haridwar, Bangalore, Bhopal and Hyderabad among others.
"We have embarked upon a major expansion plan to meet the growing power sector opportunities and to match this we shall be recruiting people at massive levels," Puri said.
