Mumbai Feb 21 : The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the distribution licencee that supplies uninterrupted power to Mumbai city, is entering into a power generation business. It has invited bids for the setting up of wind power project with the generation capacity ranging between 50 mw and 100 mw.
BEST has made a budgetary allocation of Rs 15 crore for 2006-07 for the this purpose. BEST currently draws power from Tata Power Company (TPC) since 1925 and supplies it across 68 kms in the island city of Mumbai.
The power purchased by BEST was 4,155 million units during the last fiscal. BEST decision to go in for wind power generation comes in the wake of a Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (Merc) directive.
“As per the Merc directive, every power utility has to produce or procure a specific percentage of its total requirement of electricity from non-conventional sources of energy (green power). It is binding on all utilities to make provisions for getting green power or else face penalty,” informed SA Puranik, deputy general manager (electric supply) BEST.
Puranik justified BEST’s move to go in for power generation as the undertaking had to currently rely on drawing power from TPC. “This is not going to work as the power demand may increase in future and thus instead of simply buying power from TPC at higher cost BEST preferred to set up its power generation,” he added.
