Mumbai, Mar 12: There may be some good news for people on-the-move as Spice Telecom, through its mobile TV service called Spice TV, has tied up with BBC for telecasting news content. Mobile TV is a technology that allows people to watch live telecast of television content on their mobile phones. The television content available through a mobile TV service has news and entertainment as the two primary genres. While the demand for news content is higher and topical and has to be telecasted live within a small time lag of two to three minutes (time required to decode and compress data), entertainment programmes and pre-recorded content can take a longer time to be decoded. Mukul Khanna, vice president marketing, Spice Telecom said, “We are very happy about the tie up with BBC and the only challenge that we are facing is the lack of a high speed network to allow uninterrupted streaming for consumers.”
Prior to this, Spice TV had also tied up with ICL (Indian Cricket League) to telecast the first season of the cricket coverage. The Indian market for mobile TV is expected to reach Rs 1,440 crore in 2008 according to a recent study.
