A trio of Australian sporting icons accused the country's cricket side on Wednesday of having lost its "moral compass" in a row over a ban on Indian spinner Harbhajan Singh for racial abuse.

As cricket authorities moved to defuse a two-day standoff and Indian threats to abandon their tour, Sport Australia Hall of Fame head John Bertrand said the home team had grown arrogant through success, and needed more respect for opponents.

"Sport is only sport. It's not war," Bertrand, a former champion yachtsman, told the Herald Sun newspaper.

The Australian team has been accused of unsportsmanlike, "boorish" behaviour in its second Test victory over India, with captain Ricky Ponting accused of encouraging an overly aggressive approach on the field.

Bertrand said his concerns were echoed by Hall of Fame colleagues Herb Elliott, an Olympic gold winning middle distance runner, and marathon champion Robert de Castella, a former director of the Australian Institute of Sport.

"We believe Australia's Test team moral compass needs to be retuned," said Bertrand, who skippered the yacht Australia II to America's Cup victory in 1983.

The Indian cricket board (BCCI) on Tuesday said the Australian tour would continue on condition Harbhajan Singh eventually be cleared of the racial abuse charge and a three-match ban issued by the International Cricket Council (ICC) be dropped.

BCCI held an emergency meeting after the ICC removed umpire Steve Bucknor for the third Test in Perth and appointed a mediator between the two teams.

'Boorish Behaviour'

The row has divided sports mad Australians, with fans split over whether the country's world champion team had abandoned sportsmanship in its ruthless pursuit of success, marked by 16 successive test victories.

"All I can say is that Ricky Ponting has got the full support of our team and probably every cricketer in Australia," Test batsman Mike Hussey said, while former Australia captain Richie Benaud said Ponting had been an "outstanding" leader.

Former tennis number one Lleyton Hewitt, who's aggressive approach has itself drawn criticism, said the Australians had nothing to apologise for.

But respected cricket commentator Peter Roebuck on Tuesday called for Ponting to be sacked, and veteran cricket writer Mike Coward noted in a column for The Australian newspaper that the team's behaviour worsened when challenged.

"While they consider themselves fair if hardnosed and aggressive professionals, a growing number of observers see them as exceptional cricketers given to boorish, arrogant and ungracious behaviour," Coward wrote.

Even fans have admitted to cheering for India to deliver the...

Is any of my fellow indian noticing the fact that most of the Australian cricketing greats and commentators and even the public is on the side of India in this matter ? Has any one noticed that Australian fans were cheering India because 79 percent of them didn't think Australia was playing in the spirit of the game ? See this is the difference between the white man and the rest of us. While anybody can be bad or wrong at times but the white race essentially has its moral compass pointing in the right direction and they have the will and the ability to reverse or fight a wrong done by their own without succumbing to tribal mentality. It is for this reason that the culprits in Abu Gharib are languishing in prisons in America. It is for this reason that Australians are supporting India over thier own team. I hope this realization will stop the Indians from trying to paint every Australian in particular and all whites in general as racists. Think about it. When it comes to racism, there is no one worse than us.

Australian players gone mad to win the match at any cost, even Ponting done a good job on the 1st innings for a wicket that catch is not taken properly, but the last day he looses his mind and feared whether the match will be a draw and fails to equal the record... The worst part is still the Aussies didn't agree what they have done! People loves Cricket when it played in good manner..

Well, at least this tour/incident will bring to notice and hopefully new rules and laws established in cricket so that teams don't ever sledge in the first place. And hopefully the ICC will make amends to treat all teams alike be it Australia or not. If this way of hard-playing-cricket (so called) then let the Australians start playing cricket like the rest of the world does, or else they will have to be left out as was South Africa in the days of apartheid. Australia is the only country that sledges and has a long history to that. And till today the rest of the world does not believe in sledging to be an important tool as the Aussies think and employee. I say this because sledging is the root-cause of the problem and not racism in the first place. Let the Australians change the way they play their cricket, or else be left out. I am sure there are serious ramifications as an outcome of this tour.

Pack up your team and p*** off back to india is what ppl in Aus are saying. We dont have enough tissues for the cry babies that india have sent over here. A more pathetic effort on a last day of test cricket we have not seen for a long time. India - champions at home - couldnt win against under eight girls away.

This is just 1% of the Australian crowd who have spoken against the Aussie team. While the entire media-- ie nespapers,t.v channels feel Australain have comprised to the Indian team and bow down to the wishes as they want th egame to go on. SO INDIANS,DO NOT GET CARRIED AWAY BY SWEET TALKS . U NEED TO COME HERE AND SEE WITH UR OWN EYES. START GETTING PATRIOTOC -- IE ADMIRING UR OWN NATIONAL HEROES AND NOT IMPORTED PEOPLE.

Well, if Ponting is to be believed then he seems to be the man with highest INTEGITY in the whole blunder. I am surprised why has no one asked him yet that IF BOTH HE AND SYMONDS KNEW THAT THEY HAD KNICKED AND WERE OUT WHY DID THEY NOT WALK AND STOOD THEIR GROUND. Symonds even said in a press conference that he knew hea had knicked... Does that indicate a GENTLEMAN'S behaviour or a dastardly and unsporting spirit. I believe the only thing it shows is the insistance of the Aussie team to win it by HOOK-OR-CROOK and thats what they exactly did; Deceived and lied on field. No wonder Ponting put his finger up when Ganguly's catch had been grounded- too much to expect honesty from men who would lie to win.Would someone make this question reach the right stage and be made public???
