Cold-shouldered by the Congress leadership in the light of the controversy that he had sought to stir, senior leader Arjun Singh has hurriedly retraced his steps to fall in line and pledge absolute loyalty to Sonia Gandhi and her family.
The senior leader and union HRD minister on Sunday issued a statement that the storm he had triggered by questioning the internal decision making process in the party, “is a closed chapter as far as I am concerned”. Quickly flagging his commitment to 10 Janpath, Singh declared that he would “do everything to maintain the loyalty and commitment to the remaining members of the (Nehru-Gandhi) family till I live”. Singh however continued to be the focus of attack from party leaders. The septegenerian leader got a taste of the leadership’s cold response on Saturday when Sonia Gandhi refused to even acknowledge his presence while attending the convocation ceremony of Jamia Hamdard in the capital. She then went on to credit Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with major initiatives in the field of education.
Upset at being increasingly sidelined in the party, Singh had spoken out in an interview in Mohin Kahan Vishram, a book written on him by noted hindi journalist Kanhaiyalal Nandan. Apparently targeting leaders like Ahmed Patel, whom he seems to blame for being kept out of the decision-making process, Singh had commented that the mechanism in the party has “fallen in a bit of disarray”.
Subsequently, at a function to release the book on Friday last, Singh further said that “evaluation of loyalty in the party was now being done in a very narrow context”. The remarks were seen in the context of his fighting for space and attention in the party. They, however, instantly invited attacks from party leaders starting with senior leader RK Dhawan, besides others like Digvijay Singh and Ajit Jogi. On Sunday, two others joined them in publicly berating Arjun Singh. Senior leader and union minister of state V Narayansamy lashed out at Singh saying his remarks were unacceptable. Former MPCC chief Subhash Yadav, on the other hand, charged that the senior minister may have “some other intentions” in stirring the controversy when general elections are round the corner.
