Bangalore, Jan 10: Union minister for human resource development Arjun Singh called for ‘consensus’ on the issues plaguing the Indian education system, and has said that the government aimed to solve the issues before the beginning of the next academic session.
Addressing the inaugural session of a two-day “conference of state minsiters of higher and technical education,” Mr Singh said that the issues before the government was to ensure equity in higher and technical education, maintaining regional balance in the spread of educational institutions, mobilising resources and “breaking the insularity of the sector from newer ideas”. “The questions of private and foreign universities, those of fees and admissions are to be discussed in the backdrop of these larger issues,” he said.
Karnataka chief minister Dharam Singh said that the conference would address issues such as the establishment of private universities, entry of foreign universities into India, and the system of granting admissions in professional institutions.
The minister said that Indian universities have not yet signed the general agreement on trade in services as the country was not yet prepared to open up its higher education system for global competition.
“However, the education sector here will have to open up for global competition sooner or later. The discussions during the event would enable India to strengthen its education sector in quality and competitiveness,” he added.
