Kolkata, May 12: Apple Computer Inc’s gadget to podcast iTunes songs from an iPod machine or to play digital content in a computer on a high-definition television set will be reaching India early next month.
Apple, the $19.5-billion US consumer electronics giant, had announced the availability of its Apple TV—a network device with an Intel processor and a hard disk drive—in India two weeks back. Global shipments had begun in April.
Sanjay Chordia, an Apple premium reseller here, said Apple TV would sell at around Rs 18,700 and be available across the country, including Apple’s 11 Imagine stores.
Apple TV will connect wirelessly all home PCs and make content like video or music available on a TV. The box has a 40 GB hard disk drive that can locally store 50 hours of movies, 9,000 songs and 25,000 pictures. It can also handshake with the rival Windows platform besides the usual Mac systems.
Apple TV is similar to the Windows Media Centre PC, which seamlessly connects most home entertainment devices with a TV. However, unlike the Media Centre, it does not replace any existing devices.
But Rajeshwar Singh Butalia, head of retail in Apple’s Indian subsidiary Apple Computer International Pvt Ltd, is confident that Apple TV will be a success here. Apple officially does not disclose its India sales figure or the share in the computer market. Chordia sees Apple TV as another product that will make Apple more acceptable to Indians.
