Kolkata, Oct 25 : Mumbai-based Al Kabeer Exports Pvt Ltd is aiming at 37% growth in West Bengal as the frozen foods market is growing at a rate of more than 30% in the state. This growth-rate target is second highest for the company, after Chennai.
The size of the frozen foods segment in the ready-to-cook category is estimated to be Rs 1 crore in the state with seven major players sharing the pie.
Al Kabeer regional manager Sudip Banerjee said, "We have already achieved a growth rate of 34% this fiscal in West Bengal because of the new retail formats opening all over."
Al Kabeer has a basket of 51 products with 20 in the vegetarian category. It is the only player in the frozen raw mutton category.
"We had a modest 21% growth in last two fiscals, but people have started leaning towards frozen foods," Banerjee said.
While green peas have the largest share in the frozen foods business, other categories have also started to pick up. The average purchase size for Al Kabeer has doubled from Rs 250 three years back.
"Modern retail formats have been instrumental in spreading awareness about the frozen foods in the state," he said.
Al Kabeer's share in the frozen food segment in West Bengal is almost 20%. It supplies to around 250 modern retail format stores in the state.
Although raw mutton constitutes 40% of the company's revenue from the state, vegetarian items have shown a better take off. Al Kabeer supplies to retail outfits like Spencers, more, Arambagh Hatcheries, Vishal and Egaro.
"The numbers will grow when Metro Cash & Carry starts operating in the state," Banerjee said.
