Hyderabad, Sept 19: After a long dry spell, there is good news for the poultry industry. Andhra Pradesh is expecting a bumper maize crop for the kharif 2004.
The production in the state is expected to be about 16 lakh tonne, according to Dr NN Singh, project director, Indian Maize Research Centre.
In a release, he said that though there were apprehensions due to delayed monsoon and longer gap, the latest estimates for the state are indicating a bumper crop.
Further, he said that at present, daily about 20-25 truck loads of maize are arriving in different market yards.
Accordingly, the National Egg Coordination Committee has advised the poultry farmers not to purchase maize on large scale as the prices are anticipated to come down in the days to come.
The committee is also arranging to procure maize in substantial quantities through agencies like Markfed and Cargill for distribution to poultry farmers in off-season months in the state, the release added.
It may be recalled that recently, in order to provide relief for the small farmers against the artificial shortage of feed for the poultry sector, NECC had acquired about 6,000 tonne of maize and distributed among the small farmers in Hyderabad, Chitoor, Vizag and Namakkal regions at a reduced price.
Due to hoarding and manipulation of some traders, the prices of maize had not come down. NECC has advised farmers not to resort to panic buying and buy the minimum requirement as the prices are expected to decrease soon.
