Bangalore: : Global ISP major America Online Ltd’s (AOL) initial investment to expand its back-office BPO and call centre operations in Bangalore will be around Rs 35-40 crore.
AOL, which made a rather quiet and low profile entry into the BPO space in India early this year, has set up operations at the ITPL (International Technology Park) in Bangalore after having taken up six floors of a building. Sources said that the AOL space could accommodate over 3,000 people.
However, AOL officials remained tightlipped about the company’s plans for India.
“AOL had set up a small development centre for Netscape in Bangalore a few years ago. But with the BPO business taking off in India, it decided to move back-end support work for their ISP as well as technical support and processing operations to India,” Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) - Bangalore director BV Naidu told eFE.
While about Rs 35-45 crore has been mentioned by AOL as the initial investment, the figure is expected to go up and large scale recruitments are already under way, Mr Naidu said.
Mr Naidu said 41 companies (excluding AOL) had commenced operations from STPI in Bangalore during the first five months of the current fiscal.
The total investment by these companies would be in the range of Rs 260-300 crore. Most of these companies are in the BPO segment, Mr Naidu added.
