: Manhattan Clam Chowder. Teriyaki Chicken Wings. Or Eve Grilled Polenta with Fontina cheese and roasted pears. Familiar to those who have spent time in the Big Apple, but not easily accessible outside it. As it is with a replica of Degas’ Walking Horse, or Jane Poupelet’s Woman Bathing.
Welcome to a culinary experience with dollops of art. That’s perhaps an apt description for a food cum arts promotion on at two of Delhi’s hotels. Jaypee’s hotels – Vasant Continental, and Siddharth, both have a branch of the Eggspectation, a North America-based resto café bar chain.
“New York and New Delhi are very similar — cosmopolitan and diverse, with multiple points of commonality,” says Donald Bleau, CEO, Eggspectation. “And it made great sense to combine the multicultural milieu of New York to Delhites for them to find authentic recipes from the former.” Bleau stresses that the dishes on offer till next Sunday will provide the tangy tastes of the city’s population. So there are dishes from Harlem, Soho, Little Italy, China Town, Greenwich Village and other vibrant parts of the planet’s largest urban melting pot. “The focus is on street food,” points out Bleau. “The preparation is just as it would be there, just the vegetarian selection is much larger. Our challenge was to make it authentic New York, and it took about a month of study and training.”
And in a first of sorts, The Met Store too has joined into this unique promotion. “We have associated with Jaypee for the New York Festival as we felt there is a complete synergy here, hence we decided to promote the art and cultural heritage of New York City,” says Karan Jain, the man behind the Museum’s only store in India. So for those In India who still have to wait before they land up in New York, well, at least the flavours and aesthetics of the cityare here.
Dig into your Uptown burgers, White pizza (where Ricotta, Parmesan and Mozzarella meet in hearth-baked crusts with oregano, basil and black pepper) and New York cheese cake while the going’s good.
When in Delhi, eat as New Yorkers do.
