Prime Minister David Cameron will visit Jallianwala Bagh Wednesday, becoming the first British premier to make a trip to the site in Amritsar where more than one thousand people protesting peacefully were massacred in 1919 on the orders of a British army officer.

The Indian Express has learnt that Cameron will fly to Amritsar in a special aircraft in the forenoon and return to Delhi by midday, before flying out of the country in the afternoon.

South Block and Scotland Yard were closely coordinating the visit, and have kept it under wraps because of security concerns.

Cameron’s trip will take place 16 years after Queen Elizabeth II and her husband Prince Philip visited Amritsar in 1997. Philip had angered many by describing the massacre as “vastly exaggerated” during the visit. Police had to cane protesters who carried black flags and raised slogans against the Queen in Amritsar.

In recent years, there have been a flurry of visits to Amritsar by British government personalities. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw went there twice and British minister Baroness Sayeeda Hussain Warsi also made a trip recently.

While it is not known whether Cameron will tender an apology for the massacre when he signs the visitor’s book at Jallianwala Bagh - as demanded by Sikh leaders in Amritsar - British visitors in the past have condoled the deaths in the shooting.

This topic has divided the 'Indians' exactly the same way,the Brits succeesfully used in ruling us for so long. Even today we are divided and confused. David Cameron is seeking to foster some amity with India through redressing the past ,but it has sadly become a Hindu/Sikh divide. What could one say ? ,but hang their head in despair.

Will India appologize for 1984 attack on Sikh Gurdwaras

Worst massacre was done by Indian army in 1984 when it attacked Sikh Gurdwaras in Punjab in 1984. There is nothing in history which was as cruel to Sikhism as the heinous acts of Indian army. When will India appologize for the murder of thousand of Sikhs including hundreds of children. When will India allow the promised plebiscite in Kashmir and let them decide their future? India should practice what it preaches to others. Stop behaving like- Bagal mein shuri, moonh mein ram ram.

I believe that what happened to sikh community in 84 anti-sikh riots was disgrace to the country. and I personally think that even after a long time had passed we shuld never ever forget the inident and try bringing each and evry culprit to book no matter whether they are dead or alive. but seriously i dont think it was Indian army that did the massacre. operation blue star was immensly nessecary because had khalisan been declared paistan would have done a bangladesh on us and India might not have recovered from that.i am of the opinion that anyone threatening the integrity of India because they want something outside the constitutional framework(that too if Armed) shuld be dealt with severely . if operation bluestar might not have happend there might have been 3 failed states at each others throat for very long long time.
